Self-Love: How to Show Up For Yourself Every Day

Face it, if you do not take care of yourself no one will. We have all heard the take-off instructions on the plane. “If the cabin loses pressure, secure your own mask first before assisting others”. While it may seem a little selfish, this is a great concept because how can you even begin to help others if you cannot even help yourself.

Focusing on yourself may seem impossible with life obligations including children, partners, family, friends, work, etc. However, it is necessary. If you take the time to fill your own emotional bucket, then you will have so much more to give others.

The journey to self-love can be a long one. But taking steps to be there for yourself is a great start. Let’s explore a few ways you can show up for yourself daily.

Be an advocate for yourself

PRIORITIZE yourself, your wants, and your dreams.

One definition of an advocate is to speak in support of a person. Who doesn’t need a support system? Try to be in your own corner. Support your ideas, dreams, and aspirations.

Stand up for yourself. Do not let people walk all over you or take advantage of you. You are on this earth to do great things so walk in that reality daily.

CREATE a self-care routine

For a few years, I created self-care bingo boards. Every day I encouraged myself to do something on the board. There were things as small as ‘take a 5-minute meditation break’ and some were longer like ‘run for an hour’.

I chose tasks depending on how I felt and what time commitment I could give. I appreciated these moments because they forced me to think about myself for a moment. To exit the monotony of the day and truly focus on something that made me happy.

Maybe I will try this again in May since May is my Self-Care Challenge month for 2022.

Engage in things that make you happy

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

— Mahatma Ghandi

FOCUS on your happiness to stay in alignment with your best self. Life is not meant to be lived in misery or darkness. We are meant to enjoy the fullness of life and the joy it brings.

This does not mean that every day will be roses, chocolate, and ice cream. There will be hard times but it is how you handle those hard times that matters.

Choose happy. You are in charge of your happiness. Do not let anyone take that power away from you. Choose to be optimistic. Choose to see the brighter side of things whenever you can.

Invest in Yourself

INVEST in your personal and professional development. We invest in our children, our businesses, and others, but we do not always do the same for ourselves.

Skip the morning coffee and save money for the class you want to take. Spend some dollars to launch a passion project you have been pondering for years. Put a little money away each month for your dreams. YOU ARE SO WORTH IT.

Remember that “practice makes better”. Make an intentional effort to practice self-love and show up for yourself daily in some way. Prioritize yourself. Care about yourself. Be happy. Invest in yourself. I know this is not always easy but trust me, it is worth it. If you just take 10 minutes out of your day to show up for yourself. It will make a world of difference.
